General Description

• Testosterone is a steroid sex hormone from the androstane family and is important for the maintenance of several biological functions

• This compound is an androgen that exerts its function by binding to and activating the androgen receptor

Applications

• Testosterone is irreversibly converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in target tissues by the enzyme 5-∝ reductase

• Testosterone or DHT (its active metabolite) ligand-androgen receptor complexes act as a transcription factor, stimulating the expression of several responsive genes

• It antagonizes the androgen receptor to induce gene expression that causes the growth, development, and maintenance of several biological functions

• This compound is commonly used in vivo studies as an ester derivative due to its rapid metabolism by the liver
