Reacts with 1,2-diols, e.g. sugars, to form 1-(dimethylamino)ethylidene cyclic acetals which can be cleaved with aqueous AcOH, giving the monoacetate of the less hindered OH, thus providing a method for selective monoprotection of the diol: Can. Applications

N,N-Dimethylacetamide dimethyl acetal is used as a reagent for the synthesis of amides, diacylamines, and heterocycles, one carbon inserting synthon in preparation of pyrimido[1,2-a][1,3,5]triazin-6-ones. It is used as intermediate in building block.
