Brain Heart Infusion Broth is a modification of the media by Rosenow and Hayden. The infusion from calf brains has replaced the brain tissue and disodium phosphate has replaced the calcium carbonate buffer.

Application Notes | Brain Heart Infusion Broth is developed for the cultivation of a large variety of fastidious and non-fastidious, aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms including bacteria, yeast and fungi (molds). It is very useful for blood cultures. It can also be used to detect organisms in blood of patients on sulfonamide therapy by the addition of PABA (0.05 g/L). |

Preparation Method | Suspend 37 g of the medium in one liter of deionized or distilled water and heat slowly, if necessary. The addition of a small amount of agar (0.1%) is recommended for the growth and isolation of pathogens from blood and other specimen material (anaerobic organisms). Dispense in tubes and sterilize at 121 °C (15lbs. of pressure) for 15 minutes. |
