Applications

Ampicillin is used as asemi-synthetic antibiotic which has antibacterial activity structurally related to penicillin. It is widely used selection reagent for transformed cells expressing β-lactamase. It is also used to prevent and treat a number of bacterial infections. It may also be used to prevent group B streptococcal infection in newborns.

Stock solution:An ampicillin stock solution can be prepared at a concentration of 50 mg/mL in 1M NH4OH and should be stored at -20⁰C.Add 1g of ampicillin to 10mL of dH2OSterilize the solution using a 0.22μm filterStore solution in different aliquots at -20⁰CLB-ampicillin agar preparation:Dissolve the following in 500 mL dH2O:5g tryptone2.5g yeast extract5.0g NaCl7.5g agar25mg ampicillinOR20g pre-mixed LB agar powder25mg ampicillinBoil solution on stirring hot plate for 1 – 2 min.Autoclave for 20 minutes and let cool to 50-60⁰C.Pour approximately 10mL of molten LB agar into each plate.Allow plates to solidify for approx. 20 minResearch Use only: Not intended for animal or human diagnostic or therapeutic use.Other References : Beilstein: 1090925
